Valium (generic is Diazepam) is in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. Diazepam affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause anxiety, seizures, and muscle spasms.
Diazepam is used to relieve anxiety, nervousness, and tension associated with anxiety disorders. It is also used to treat certain types of seizure disorders and muscle spasms.
Some side effects are:
* an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, face, or tongue; or hives);
* sores in the mouth or throat;
* yellowing of the skin or eyes;
* a rash;
* hallucinations or severe confusion; or
* changes in your vision
* drowsiness, dizziness, or clumsiness;
* depression;
* nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation;
* difficulty urinating;
* vivid dreams;
* headache;
* dry mouth;
* decreased sex drive; or
* changes in behavior

They are VERY similar drugs. People that say “I need a valium” are pretty much just saying they need something to relax. It’s like when people have a long day at work or a stressful day they might say “I need a drink”.
They are in the same category of drug, which is the anti-anxyolitic (they are used to moderate anxiety). Valium is older and comes in doses of 2 mg., 5 mg. and 10 mg. Xanax is newer and comes in smaller doses. Xanax may be more addicting, but they both work well for treating panic attacks. The problem is, they don’t work indefinitely at the same dose (the body builds a tolerance for them), and you should avoid drinking alcohol while taking them, as this could result in a black out or in serious problems with judgment (especially around heavy machinery).
